Kill la Kill is off to a pretty great start, but as long as we're on the subject of people we love making new anime…

WHO HERE IS HYPED FOR SPACE DANDY? I, for one, can't wait to see this "dandy guy in the space."

(And pls stahp comparing NGE to TTGL… Apples and oranges guys- they're both fruit but they're vastly different.)

Comparing NGE to TTGL is more like comparing grapefruits to maraschino cherries, respectively.

Actually, I think they're more like opposites. Where EVA is all dark and brooding, Lagann is all… well… What the Hell Do You Think It Is?

Eva is a decunstruction of the mecha genre, Gurren Laggan is a reconstruction to put it simply.

Don't get me wrong, I like Gurren Laggan and Evangelion, but Oh My God are they over hyped. Yes, they're good. But, they're so many other great, even better, mecha animes out there. Aim for the Top! Gunbuster, Mazinger Z, Mobile Suit Gundam, The King of Braves GaoGaiGar, Martian Successor Nadesico, and Overman King Gainer to name a few.

Anyways, just finished watching my summer animes. I recommend watching Uchouten Kazoku. Great animation and opening credits.

You're right, it's not a reconstruction. Quite far from it actually. I thought a reconstruction was something else entirely, but a quick check on TV tropes set me straight.

So how about that Watamote? It's a weird feeling when you identify with a Japanese schoolgirl in her early teens, but it was still pretty great. Somehow better than the manga I daresay.

Monogatari was far from a let-down too, but something just felt… Different.

I found a thread on /m/ where there was a big shitstorm over whether KLK discussion belonged there or not.

First time watching:

Looking back on it after a few minutes: There were a few animation errors here and there, and the pacing seemed a bit quick at times. Overall it is just an anime adaptation of Calamity Trigger and a good mental picture of what all is going on during the dialogue in the game. It seems as if they might be going for a bad ending every 1 or 2 episodes, but I can't say at this point. Overall, I wholeheartedly recommend watching it even if you have never played the games before.

I guess I went in with a more critical eye than Zar was. The pacing definitely was too fast for my tastes, but I can live with it as long as the presentation is good.

Though they have made some glaring errors so far, such as the high pace Bullet Dance remix in the slow paced Noel and Hazama arrival Scene and many of the animation errors tied to Hazama himself (I wouldn't think copying ANY of the characters postures would be that hard considering the number of sprites they have to go off of), and the battles seem a bit watered down from the fighting games themselfs.

Or maybe I am just spoiled.

But anyways, I am torn between waiting for the DVD rips to come out (with the Animation fixes) and watching this as it airs. I guess I will keep watching the aired versions until the first few DVD Rips come out, then make a call.

Speaking of glaring errors in the animations of Hazama… I noticed that his chin changed nearly every scene.

Kill la Kill aka Ryuko has a rocking body.

G Gundam is the supreme mecha anime.

G Gundam is cool and all, but if we're being honest with ourselves, it's not really Gundam.

Not that there's anything wrong with that; it just seems like its plot and characters would be better served if they had their own verse that could be built around the concepts that they embody.

It's the only series in Future Century timeline. The original and it's spin-offs are in Universal Century. So it does have its own verse.

I like her for her personality…
Seriously though, so far, I love all the characters. Their personalities are so eccentric.

I cannot grasp the true form of the Gundam timeline.

My point is that G Gundam just feels like it doesn't belong in the Gundam franchise. A mecha anime like Code Geass almost feels like it could work as a Gundam show, but a mecha anime like Gurren Lagann or Mazinger Z doesn't.

Impulse buy, but I bought Last Exile Season 2 set. Though I screwed up so now I have to wait for my next allowance to go order Season 1.

Ahem. Yeah, I do. Not as often as I pay for Manga, but I will often support the official release because hopefully some day they will stop being 80-100 bucks a season. (I have a few thousand dollars worth of Manga, actually. Mainly because I took advantage of the Border's Closing Clearances and got a good ton of them for 90% off or something. I miss Borders…)

Kill la kill is just getting better and better.

What do you expect? It's Gurren Lagann all over again. And as everyone knows, g(l)= 9000^e, where e is the number of episodes.

Double post, I know. But seriously, after all i'm hearing about "Kill la Kill" the more I feel like I need to see it. After all it is created by the some people behind "PSG" and "Gurren Lagann".

Speaking of Gurren Lagann I will have to say, that honestly I do think I have an adoration of it that may be a bit bias. Most likely due to it being the second mecha anime I ever watched; with the first being Evangelion. And so, after being throughly disappointed by the original ending (End of Evangelion, my feelings towards are another matter entirely, long story short: way better than original, but far from perfect) I stumbled upon Gurren Lagann, and promptly had my brains blown out by sheer awesomeness. It was a strange situation of watching the deconstruction before knowing the "common format", and with Gurren Lagann taking inspiration from many, many mecha shows before it and using them in it's own original way; I was essentially exposed to many elements of the mecha genera through Gurren Lagann, as opposed to the shows before it.

Kill La Kill episode 4 was one the most stupid things I've seen in a long time. Make no mistake though, I fucking loved it and was laughing the whole, it was down right hilarious. I'd compare it to the Gurren Lagann bathhouse episode.

10/10 would watch again

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has listed the 19 films submitted for Best Animated Feature Oscar contention. Not all of them have fulfilled the requirement to run in Los Angeles this calendar year yet, and the academy has a history of disqualifying movies that are less than 75% animated, but if 16 are accepted, then there will be 5 nominees for the next award

If it did get nominated, it would be the first (not-Ghibli) anime to do so.

I can't shake the feeling that the Anglosphere as a whole just plain doesn't care about non-English film. I don't know why I'm so excited about the notion of a (not-Ghibli) anime, especially a Meduka movie (of all things) getting nominated for the Oscars, but I really am. Maybe it's just because except for maybe maaaaybe Bollywood, you just can't get more exotic than anime when it comes to cinematography, and you just can't get more anime than magical girls when it comes to anime.

Of course, Megucas really aren't your typical magical girls… being introduced to magical girls with with Megucas is like being introduced to mechas with giant cloned pilotable alien cyborgs, an being introduced to anime in general with Meduka is like being introduced to introduced to anime in general with That Movie Where Everybody Turns Into Orange Juice.

If only they had started the animated Oscars four years earlier…

While its true that the majority of people don't care about Non-english films, the Academy awards aren't tied down to the publics opinion. The voters are 6,000 people that work in the movie industry and as such have a more informed view on movies. Also, a reason that you don't see more anime works or foreign movies is that there are various rules of eligibility that many films don't meet.

Madoka Magica is having a limited stateside release ( I got my ticket!) so It should be able to qualify for a nomination. Also considering the lackluster American animated films on the list, it wouldn't be impossible for it to snag the nomination.

While I would really like for Rebellion to get nominated, I'm really doubtful it will. I still think there's a strong bias against anime in the west when it comes to recognition by the general public. Ghibli films are a lot more accessible than most anime movies, and given that the Madoka movie is a deconstruction of a genre that only really exists in anime (the magical girl genre), as well as being a continuation of a series which very few people outside of the anime community would know about, I have a hard time seeing it get the nomination.

I wholeheartedly agree with the remark about people in English-speaking countries not caring about foreign films. You have no idea how many people have made my blood boil by refusing to watch anything without a dub (this applies to live action foreign movies more than anime, strangely). Now I'm no dub hater, I just wish people would give a chance to films and series without dubs. Combine that with the very persistent stereotype that animated films are mainly for children, well, I'm a bit skeptical of its chances of being nominated. Man, do I really hate that stereotype though. Like really, really, really hate it.

No doubt The Wind Rises is going to have a much better chance at getting nominated, but as I said before, the general public have no say in who gets nominated. If they did, movies like The Artist( a french film) would not even get a nomination and movies like Twilight, Transfomers, and the latest superhero movie would clog all the spots. So don't count out Madoka just yet.

True, but the thing is that loads (I hesitate to say "most"; I don't know the statistics) foreign films don't even get theatrical releases in the US, precluding any chance at all at the Oscars. This is because the general public doesn't want to go to them.

I'll admit, I wish I had more exposure to foreign film -- I kinda feel like a weeb when I realize that the only things I've ever watched subbed are all animu.

Also, I suggest you check the winners and nominees of previous Oscars throughout the years. you'll realize many foreign films get in there every year.

Edit: I just checked, its going to play in LA for the required time in order to qualify for a nomination which is seven consecutive days. Its going to also be shown in many major cities in the US. If you would like to go, check the link above.

The whole reason I started this discussion was not because I figured that it would really draw attention to anime if something like Madoka Magica managed to get into the Oscars. I figure that maybe if we can get more people into anime, we can get more people into foreign stuff in general. I probably wouldn't have been willing to watch Prisoners of War dubbed on Hulu.

Well, that's not going to happen. If Madoka were to win, it would make news no doubt, but nothing would really change. Foreign films require more effort to see and aren't as visible as the major motion pictures that come out every year from Hollywood. That's not appealing for many people, but that's ok.
