Metadata: data that describes other data. Meta is a prefix that in most information technology usages means "an underlying definition or description." Metadata summarizes basic information about data, which can make finding and working with particular instances of data easier.

If you use the search bar to find images, this is due to metadata. Metadata is what the site's search engine uses to find images. However, this information must be entered in manually.

Tags

Tags are how people find images on KYM. Relevant tags make finding a copy of an image within a gallery with thousands of images much easier. They can also be used to find images among all galleries on the entire site.

Tag DOs

• Add the name of what the image is from (what is the name of the show/ comic/ movie, etc.)
• Tag characters in the image
• Tag memes within the image
• If there is a phrase that is being parodied, add the original phrase to the tag list
• Tag the name of the artist if it is a piece of fanart or the creator is well known
• Tag what is realistically important in the image (I.E. an image with a character that almost always wears glasses would not benefit from a "glasses" tag unless the image focused specifically on the glasses. However, if a character that normally doesn't wear glasses has them in an image, this tag would be relevant.)
• Think about what people would look for if trying to find that specific upload in the entire site database and tag that.

Tag DON'Ts

• Only tag the entry name (this is functionally the same as having no tags at all
• Add tags that are completely unrelated to the image
• Add random tags
• Add opinions/ commentary in the tags
• Remove useful tags

Titles

Titles are important so it doesn’t show up as “Image 923843” and helps it get picked up by off-site search engines. Like tags, titles are also searchable with the site’s search engine.

Title DOs

• Have the actual text in the image as the title (this is especially important for users searching for image macros)
• Have the name that of fanart given by the creator as the title (Protip: use copy/paste when at the source)
• Have a title that basically explains what is in the image

Title DON'Ts

• Mash characters that are completely meaningless and/or useless, such as -_., or blank spaces
• Add titles that have nothing to do with the image (major exception being Filename threads)
• Remove tiles from an image, so that the title is just the default image number.
• Have opinions/commentary as the title (major exception being if it is something that may be popular, but untrue, such as a debunked leak, or a photoshop many may believe to be real)

Notes

Notes are also searchable by the site’s search engine. They should be used to put any additional information that doesn’t fit well in the other four fields, such as an explanation, or additional sourcing.

Note DOs

• Add relevant text that will help people to find the post in the future
• Give an explanation of what is going on in the image if it is not obvious
• Give additional sourcing when there's more than one relevant link

Note DON'Ts

• Have a bunch or random text
• Leave a long rant (this is what the comment section is for)
• Link to NC material
• Embed autoplay videos (site wide rule)
• Provide source but leave the source fields empty

Source

To quote Mona: “Galleries shouldn't be plunder museums.” Due to the nature of the internet some things can be sourced much more easily than others, while in other cases it's truly impossible. Ideally, all images on the site would be sourced back to their original creator.

If you need help, IQDB and Sauce Nao are really good at finding images on the Japanese web, while Google Reverse Image Search is fairly good for most other things.

Source DOs

• Provide a link to the source page in Source URL
• Explicitly list the creator’s name in Source Name when available, preferably where the creator posted the content as well (on Tumblr, DeviantArt, Twitter, etc.)
• Say the name of the creator and work if the source is NC (primarily for Hentai Quotes)
• Avoid just putting in Source Name “Source”, nothing, or the raw html
• Link to the page that has the work posted with data present DO link to this

Source DON'Ts

• Leave no source when it’s extremely easy to find.
• Make no attempt to find a source unless it is obvious such efforts would be fruitless (ex: looking for the originator of a caption on an advice animal).
• Only link to a booru (unless the original source has been removed).
• Link to the page that hosts the image without data present ( DO NOT link to this it's the same as providing no source at all.

Special mention: When not to source
Sourcing should be seen as default, however, there are times when sourcing may not be practical or it would be irrelevant.

• Unedited Source material: If it is from the source material unedited, it should be obvious who the creator is (ie an official picture of a Pokemon should be obvious where it comes from, same with a screenshot from a movie etc.)

• Specific Advice Animals (or similar) captions: While the history of certain advice animals is known, trying to find who made the caption on a specific one is not going to prove fruitful. While trying to source it when uploading is the best option, many times meme entries are not made until long after the fact, and uploads are made from images saved years prior. Finding that exact image isn't going to be possible.

• The source simply no longer exists: There a many memes that date to before archives existed, or from sites that just don;t have official archives. Similarly, many of these archives disappear or are taken down. due to entries often being made years after a meme has slumped in popularity and people saving images for years and uploading them long after the fact, it is not possible to trace every image.

Procedure:
Offenders are likely to be notified about issues regarding the above through PM and/ or comments on the image itself or the uploader's wall. Warnings may be issued if the gallery already has a notification saying that images uploaded need to be sourced. If chronic issues with the above persist, and it is clear that this is due to user laziness as opposed to difficulty ability, more severe reprimanding such as warnings and or suspension may be given out.

Why make the exception for when the source is "obvious"? These things are not obvious to everyone.

Thank you Jacob for posting this. It's about time there is an official thread about tagging and sourcing guidelines. These guidelines will definitely help everyone out.

Glad these guidelines went through. Sure took a while, though.

These might need an update, given the new source field. Lots of people are just putting the word "Source" in, which is verifiably not "the name of the website where the image was originally uploaded."

To add on that, I have noticed some people are putting just the author's name in the source field, which is also not "the name of the website where the image was originally uploaded."

To be honest, people should put both the name of the website where the image originated from and the author's/artist's name not one way or the other.

Tbh, the author name is fair to put there imo. Dunno why the staff decided to run with just site name, but it probably has to do with the autosourcing to sites like Imgur.

Perhaps. Sometimes the source doesn't provide an author. So maybe that's why the site decided to run like that. But regardless, I still think it's better if people put both the site name and author's name (if possible) as it provides more information than just putting the site's name or the author's name.

With the collaboration of three other media mods, the guidelines have been updated to account for the new source field. Notes and Source areas have been edited. A few minor grammar, spelling, and textile edits were also done.
