Blue Waffle

Blue Waffle, also known as a Blue Waffle Disease is a fictious sexually transmitted disease. Online, people use mock images of a close-up photo of a discolored vagina as a bait-and-switch. Victims are told to search for an image of a blue waffle on Google's Image Search, which leads them to a shock image of the vagina.

Origin

On September 23rd, 2008, the shock site BlueWaffle.net launched.^[2] The single-serving site consists of a picture of the diseased vagina, with a small description. It reads, "Blue Waffle [bloo-wof-uh l] : A battered or infected lady cake of blue or green colouring, often brought about by extreme rammage to the female taco with penis or similar device. Blue Waffle infections are a result of dirty skank whoreness of the smack head variety and are abundant in areas of extreme chav infestations as well as areas high in whoredom."

Spread

Eventually, this was used as a form of bait and switch, baiting people into searching it on google images. These mainly came in the form of images, showing a literal blue waffle, followed by the text "bet you can't find me on google images"

On May 1st, 2010, Urban Dictionary ^[3] user Poopy Pingu defined Blue Waffle, "something that you should never google in your life!!!!!!!!!!!!! it is the sickest, vilest thing you will ever see in your life it will scar you forever." The post received more than 3,000 upvotes in less than 11 years (shown below).

Authenticity Claims

In 2011, an educator for the Women’s Health Foundation's Adolescent Pelvic Health Program^[1] contacted Dr. Amy Whitaker, an Assistant Professor of Obstetrics/Gynecology at the University of Chicago Hospital, for assistance in identifying the disease. The conclusion was that the photograph was either photoshopped or was the result of vaginal mutilation.

In 2012, Planned Parenthood^[4] published a blog post entitled "What’s blue waffle?" In the article, they write, "Blue waffle is totally, completely, 100 percent urban legend. It doesn’t exist. So anything you’ve heard about who has it, its symptoms, or the way it’s spread is made up. And pictures you might have seen of blue waffle on the Internet? They’re fake, too."

On July 2nd, 2018, YouTuber NationwideChildrens posted a video assuring viewers that Blue Waffle Disease is not real, gaining over 349,000 views in three years (shown below).

Kellogg's Blue Mermaid Waffles

In 2020, Kellogg's released a line of frozen waffles that are blue in color called "Mermaid Waffles" (shown below). Some compared the product to the Blue Waffle myth.

On August 17th, 2020, Twitter ^[5] user @BagelTiger tweeted, "STOP KELLOGG YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU'RE DOING." The tweet received more than 142,000 likes and 30,000 retweets in less than one year (shown below, right).
