About

Hentai Haven is a pornographic website devoted to anime-style pornography (Hentai) content, specifically hentai. In December 2018 the site was shut down for unknown reasons and was relaunched on May 12th, 2019.

History

HentaiHaven.org was registered on July 27th, 2014.[1] Over the following four years, it became one of the most well-known hentai websites online. It was highly rated by porn site guide The Porn Dude,[2] who gave the site five thumbs up and called it his "favorite hentai site."

The site was notable for the spread of hentai memes, specifically with regards to its tagging system. Screenshots of the site's tags were often used in Hentai Tags memes. Hentai Haven was the first site to use the infamous Ugly Bastard tag.

Shutdown

On December 19th, 2018, Hentai Haven shut down for an unknown reason. All of the site's content was unavailable and the site's homepage[3] read:

HH was born during a time when fansubs were pretty much dying. New shows were subbed weeks after release, most sites had lackluster interfaces and didn't give a crap about the content they were putting out.
HH changed all that.
But as a wise man once said, every journey must come to an end – and unfortunately, it ain't the happy kind this time. There's plenty of options out there now. Fansubs are faster than ever. Streaming sites are better than ever. There's no longer a real need for HH. We've done our part. Now it's up to the rest of you to carry the torch.
Thank you for visiting and supporting us over the years. It's been a wild ride. And you will all be sorely missed.
Sayonara.

Others theorized it could be due to a general cracking down on adult-content globally.[4] There may also be legal reasons behind the shutdown, as it was reported that Hentai Haven had lost its loli tag and that Google had received copyright claims against the site.

Online, users paid tribute to the site through a variety of memes. PewDiePie tweeted about the shutdown, saying "you deserved much more than this," gaining over 2,100 retweets (shown below).

Cooperation With Fakku

After the shutdown, the Hentai Haven homepage changed to read "We're teaming up with FAKKU to save HH!"[3] Fakku is a Hentai manga publisher.[5] As of January 4th, 2019, there are no additional details. On December 22nd, 2018, YouTuber Lost Pause posted a video about the news, gaining over 500,000 views (shown below).

They Took Down Hentai Haven

On December 31st, 2018, YouTuber TheRealElite posted a video in which a child laments the fall of Hentai Haven, gaining over 204,000 views (repost shown below).

The video was reposted to Reddit's /r/videos[6] on January 2nd, 2019, where it gained over 8,200 points. The video was covered by The Daily Dot.[7]

Relaunch

On May 12th, 2019, Hentai Haven was relaunched.[8][9] Despite earlier talks with hentai manga publisher FAKKU, the website remained independent.

We’re back. Hentai Haven 2: Electric Boogaloo. We’re operating on our own. We weren’t purchased by anyone. We’re still the same HH you know and love.
But we couldn’t have done it without Fakku. So we want to thank them first for helping coordinate things behind the scenes legally to get back online.[…]
Our goal is to make a 100% legal, 100% free, hentai anime streaming website. Better than any other legal streaming site you’ve ever seen.

As the timer counting down of the time of the launch appeared on the website, numerous posts celebrating the relaunch appeared on Reddit, Instagram and other platforms (examples shown below).

#HHisDead

On July 7th, 2019, creator of Hentai Haven known as Papa HH posted a statement on Hentai Haven's main page, also tweeting it, in which he accused FAKKU of taking over the site and backing out on the promises which were given in good faith, launching a hashtag #HHisDead.[11] The tweet gained over 10,800 retweets and 27,400 likes in two days (shown below).

#HHisDead This post will be removed soon so here's the truth about what's happening with HH. I'm the creator of HH, and I've been silent for too long because I had hope things would work out. Unfortunately, it isn't going to. HH, as you know it, is dead. FAKKU has completely taken over and booted me out. First red flag was this BS re-launch they did without even telling over the website and social media credentials. Thankfully, they we me. Hell, they completely stopped talking to me as soon as I handed stupid enough to keep using my damn CDN so I can get one last message out to you guys. It f------ sucks it has come to this. HH was my passion project, my baby. I worked on every little detail, wrote the taglines you laughed at, designed the layout, posted the videos and helped create the community we all know and love. I couldn't have done any of it without an awesome team to support me, and I'm thankful to every single one of you. I had such high hopes about this whole thing. I remember emailing FAKKU in 2016 telling them about a vision I had of HH being the crunchyroll of Hentai. I've been talking to them for years on and off, I trusted them. But things trouble headed my way and offered to bail me out last year, I was elated. I still am in fact. But had I known that Would've cost me my entire website, my baby, I would've f------ gone at it on my own, spending every cent I had to protect this community. FAKKU told me everything I wanted to hear, offering that. Told me we can't put all that in the contract right now cause the company hasn't been officially registered quite lined up for us to work together. When FAKKU told me (conveniently) about some legal never equity, employment, all me yet and I took them at their word. Turns out, people lie. A whole LOT when money is involved. So what's next? I got a few ideas. Follow my exploits over at @realpapahh for any announcements. DM me if you want. I got that newly unemployed free time. TLDR; FAKKU played me like a c---stained violin. Sayonara, Рapa HH

On the same day, FAKKU founder Jacob Grady tweeted a response to the accusations, in which he stated that he was following his intention to legitimize Hentai Haven and properly distribute the income which the site generated, not mentioning the current status of Papa HH in the company (shown below).[12] The tweet gained over 210 retweets and 960 likes in one day.

5:43 ..il LTE Notes July 7, 2019 5:36 PM going around. PapaHH shut down HH after being alerted of To dispel some of the rumors legal threats from Japan. I was in a position to help make HH legitimate and agreed to help negotiate on their behalf. Together, we had been working on licensing and converting their content and services into ones where fans would be given the option to further support the actual creators of the content. During this process, FAKKU did not make any money PapaHH helped create an incredible community at HH, and that's what we wanted to save. But there are a lot more people responsible for it than just him. I plan on reaching out and seeing if this can be worked out, and to be clear: if shutting HH down is what PapaHH wants, I would be supportive. But, I do firmly believe that continuing to make millions off of piracy and not giving part of that money to HH's staff, the creators in Japan, etc. is not an option, and that's what was happening before I got involved. -Jacob

On the same day, former staff members @heavenrend and @Fyurie posted a series of tweets in which they claimed not being paid by Papa HH after the site shut down on December 19th, 2018.[13][14] However, on the same day, they, as well as other HH staff members confirmed being reached out to by Papa HH and paid in full.[15][16][17]

On July 8th, Papa HH posted a response to Jacob Grady's statement (shown below) in which he accused him of the predatory overtake and deception, adding that he would consider further cooperation with FAKKU under certain conditions (shown below).[18]

Wow, a prompt response from FAKKU? Only time I've seen that happen is when they want something from me. Funny how effective a public shitstorm is. Since we're all here, let's settle the b------- before it even gathers steam. Sound good? Alright then, 1. Notice how he didn't refute anything said in my original statement. 2. When Jacob says, "FAKKU didn't make any money", ask yourself why on earth would he help me out if there's nothing in it for him? I'll tell you why. He owns 100% of HH now, a company he himself values at over million dollars. How do I know that? When I asked him if I can have 20% of my own company, he said "sure, if you pay me $200k" 3. I know HH wasn't legally licensed, just like FAKKU wasn't until the FBI came knocking on their door. Why do you think I contacted FAKKU in 2016, back when HH wasn't big? When HH was on nobody's radar? Why did I contact them specifically? Because I really believed I could follow in their footsteps and turn this into something legitimate. They were in my exact shoes before. I trusted them more because of it. It made perfect sense to team up. At the time though, things didn't work out. We kept in touch but nothing concrete ever came out of it. Until... 4. The purge. HH shut down after "heard" of a potential lawsuit headed my way. I didn't actually get a lawsuit. The news came from Jacob himself, and it seemed credible enough so I believed him. At the time, he seemed like a savior to me. Offering to swoop in and take over HH and deal with Japanese companies and come to a legal agreement before the lawsuit even gets to me. Brilliant! What more could I want? Hell this is precisely what I wanted all along! Talking with the content creators and the companies directly! However, one little thing he failed to mention was that I wouldn't be part of HH after that. You can see how that would rub me the wrong way. He even contractually agreed he'll handle any lawsuits regarding HH, but what would that act of generosity cost me? My site. The brand. Everything I built. Had I known that, I wouldn't have agreed and looked for another way to settle this with the copyright holders. I would've gladly paid the "millions" I earned from HH to the creators if it meant I could keep my website. Why wouldn't I pay the creators, when know that I could easily make more itf go legit? It's a no brainer. 5. About the insinuation that I didn't pay my staff... ask them yourself. The ONLY time I failed to pay them when this legal s--- popped off and I had to disappear because legitimately thought I was in trouble. Even then, I paid everyone who had was sent me invoices for that month. I paid the rest of my staff for that month as soon as I heard people had outstanding invoices. 6. When Jacob says "Together, we've been working on licensing..., he's probably mistaken me for another one of his FAKKU board members cause have no f------ clue what he has and hasn't licensed. Honest mistake l'm sure, so we'll let it slide. 7. About the fact that HH was more than just me... yeah, obviously. Who's denying that? My team was the absolute best! But I hope you remember HH was a one man army once upon a time. When no one knew its name. When it wasn't on even google. I built it up from nothing. If you think I wasn't instrumental in HH being what it is today, you're kidding yourself. If you're genuinely interested in fixing this, and willing to give me my fair share, l'd be willing to listen. But written contracts all the way. I ain't making the same mistake twice. Peace
