Signalis is a survival horror video game created by rose-engine studios and developed by Yuri Stern and Barbara Wittmann. It was released on the Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch and Steam on October 27th, 2022. The game features a unique art style, blending anime cutscenes with isometric gameplay and first-person puzzle gameplay. This approach, combined with a mysterious story left open to interpretation by design, has garnered the game a significant fan base, contributing fan art and community discussion about the story.

History

Signalis was developed by Rose-Engine, a two-person German indie game developer consisting of Yuri Stern and Barbara Wittmann. The game was released by Humble Games and Playism. Development for the game started in 2014 and was released on October 27th, 2022 on all major console platforms and Windows PC.^[1]

Reception

Upon release, the game gained a reputation as being a spiritual successor to the original Silent Hill and Resident Evil.^[2] The game reviewed well, receiving a score of 81/100 on Metacritic.^[3] On YouTube, the game received high praise in reviews from YouTubers including Bricky (shown below, left) and Max Derrat (shown below, right).

Online Presence

The game was brought to a wider audience when ManlyBadassHero recorded a Let’s Play of the game on January 8th, 2023 in which he obtained every ending, with the first part gaining 395,000 views in seven months (shown below) and the following parts garnering 234,000 and 135,000 views respectively.

The r/SIGNALIS subreddit was created on April 30th, 2020^[4] and as of August 21st, 2023, has 12,000 members. Members of the subreddit produce fan art, animations and discuss theories about the game's story. Most of the fan art and memes focus on the game's protagonist, Elster, a manmade cyborg who is on a mission to complete a promise she made to her lover Ariane Yeong. For example, on April 7th, 2023, Tumblr user tayako-x^[5] posted art of Ariane Young and Elster, gaining 100 notes in four months (shown below, left). Another main focus of the fan art is on the characters Falke and Adler, the game's antagonists. For example, on February 28th, DeviantArt user one-lazy-robot^[6] posted art of the characters (shown below, right).

The last focus of the fanart and memes is that of the other Replika models, with the most popular ones being the Kolibris, Storchs and Eules.
