This Touchdown's For You, Jesus refers to a two-panel exploitable comic strip in which an American football player dedicates a scoring play to Jesus. However, in the second panel, it's revealed Jesus is watching something else on television, apparently indifferent to the football player's dedication. In parodies, what Jesus is watching is altered.

Origin

The original artist of the comic is Cuyler Black,^[6] who posted it as part of his Inherit the Mirth collection in 2012. The comic began circulating on the internet shortly after. On December 2nd, 2012, the original comic was uploaded to the Blogspot account piczilike.^[1] The comic shows Jesus watching hockey instead of paying attention to the football player (shown below).

Spread

Edits of the comic began appearing roughly four years after it was first posted to the internet. Edited versions of the comic generally expressed the editor's love of a specific sport or piece of media. For example, one of the earliest known edits is a Game of Thrones edit that appeared on Imgur^[2] on February 8th, 2016 (shown below, left). On October 14th, 2019, Redditor Calamary_kip posted a Splatoon edit to /r/splatoon,^[3] gaining over 380 points in three years (shown below, right).

The format continued seeing usage in the 2020s. On December 12th, 2021, Tumblr^[4] user incel-rights-advocate posted an edit using the television show River Monsters, gaining over 7,000 notes on the platform (shown below, left). On September 6th, 2022, Twitter user @Zuza_real^[5] made an edit with the James Bond film Casino Royale, gaining over 60 retweets and 1,000 likes in five hours (shown below, right).
