Origin

On July 16th, 2023, X^[1] user @midsmoker34 posted an altered image of SpongeBob with wide-fitting ripped jeans, captioned, "Me: sponge Bob you have to stop. You smoke too tough. Your swag too different. Your bitch is too bad. they’ll kill you / Spongebob:" Over four months, the post received roughly 82,000 likes (shown below).

Spread

Viral reposts of the tweet quickly spread to Instagram^[2] on July 16th, 2023. There, original iterations of the format surfaced, like one posted by Instagram^[3] user @huge.poop on July 17th, 2023, which featured a redraw of rapper Joeyy as Peter Griffin, gaining over 6,200 likes in four months (shown below, left).

On July 26th, 2023, X^[4] user @zaconprozac posted an iteration about Turtle Tuck from Wonder Pets! gaining over 2,500 likes in four months (shown below, right).
